FAIRFAX, Va – The Braddock Road Stars Elite earned their first win of the season at home on Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Elite Cobras. In their first meeting at Carolina on June 12, the Cobras defeated the Stars Elite. Braddock Road responded with a 2-0 win on goals from Chris Meyers and Kaleigh Riehl to secure the first points of 2015.
The Stars Elite first got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Captain Rachel Moore served a dangerous ball deep to the back post where Riehl smartly redirected the ball to an open Meyers. Meyers calmly finished giving Braddock Road their first lead of the season. With five minutes remaining in the first half, the Stars Elite were granted a penalty kick after Moore was taken down following a nice combination play in the box. Riehl stepped up and placed the ball in the back of the net to give Braddock Road a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
With the play even for the majority of the match, the Cobras created the better scoring opportunities in the second half. Led by forward Meaghan Carrigan, Carolina had a few quality chances late in the game. Braddock Road GK Rose Chandler made the key saves necessary though to preserve the first shutout of the season for the Stars Elite.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend as the Cobras travel to take on the Atlanta Silverbacks June 27. Braddock Road is back at home next Sunday, June 28, at 2 p.m. against the first-place Dayton Dutch Lions. Fans can follow on Twitter (@BRStarselite) for more information.
